14 (The census was taken on the night of Sunday 6/7 June 1841 of persons in the house on the night and any workers who would return to the house in the morning.
The forms were distributed to the householders and then collected and checked by enumerators. In many cases the enumerators completed the forms as many of the population could not read or write.
The enumerators were volunteer schoolmasters, clergymen and others with education. Women were not allowed to be enumerators until 1891.
The census forms were then copied into printed books.
Ages in the 1841 Census were rounded down to the nearest 5 years, however, this was not consistently done by the enumerators.
