Before Mary Ann was married to John Brown she was a servant in a large farm in Skegby. Apparently her employers were deeply religious but not very kind to their servants - they did not get enough to eat and had to work very long hours, especially on Monday when they had to wake up at dawn and start the washing and could not stop until it was all done - long into the night. Allegedly, the male servants decided to teach their employers a lesson and before the family went to church one Sunday morning they loosened the wheel of their carriage. The family set of for church, the wheel came off, and some of the family were badly injured.
Mary married John Brown, son of John Brown and Maria Bailey, on 22 Jan 1865 in Kirkby in Ashfield. (John Brown was born on 20 Feb 1843 and was buried on 30 Sep 1904 in Kirkby Old Cemetery.)
Mary next married Daniel Dolan on 28 Sep 1908 in Basford Register Office.
